Last Name

 Hello, everyone.

Recently, the temperature has been getting colder, but have you got a cold? Please take care of yourself. By the way, I've been going cycling a lot on the weekends recently, and I've seen unusual last names in various places, including the area where I live. Therefore, I'm going to show you some of the unusual last names I've seen so far in this time.

The first is Seshime(勢〆), Yorimochi(寄持), Jingama(陣鎌), and Shoki(將基). They live in my neighborhood (actually, Shoki family will be moving in from now on), and their last names are all very unique and old fashioned. However, I think they are all cool and feel somewhat like warlords! Next is Tamamushi(玉虫), Shikama(色摩), Muchaku(無着), and Onmyoji(隠明寺). These are the people I met when I was in Yamagata. These last names are also quite unique. Incidentally, about Tamamushi, it literally means jewel beetle, and Muchaku does not mean not to wear anything, but to have no attachments. Last is Taya(旅), Warikomi(割込), Gokudan(極檀), Yunamochi(弓納持), and Gihou(儀宝). I met them when I was in high school, at the national club competitions and expeditions. After all, when it comes to the national level, they all have amazing last names. Especially, Gokudan and Gihou are very divine last names. All of these seem to be quite rare in a small number of households, and I looked up the origin of these, but it was difficult to find out, except that most of these are related to events and things that happened in the Edo period.

After introducing these last names, I was once again struck by their rarity and also a bit envious of them. I think it would be easy to be remembered by people who meet  them for the first time, and they would feel a sense of superiority. Anyway, if you know unusual or interesting last names, please tell me about it.

Thank you for reading.

  1. Hi Ryota!
This blog had a lot of last names that I heard for the first time. Actually, my mom told me an experience that is our last name that is Kadota(門田) was misread for Monden. I laughed when I heard this. I think it is very difficult to read rare last name.
